Alabama NRCS State Office Employees Take A Sweet Break for Katrina Victims

Sue Daniel (l) and Teresa Paglione, members of Alabama NRCS Hospitality Committee organized the fundraiser. The State Office NRCS Hospitality Committee wanted to do something to help the Katrina victims still in shelters in the area (about 100 people were being sheltered by the Lee County Red Cross).

Teresa Paglione, Chair of the Committee, called the Red Cross office to see what was needed. The Red Cross indicated a local group, Christian Care Ministries, was cooking hot meals for those in the shelters and that they may need “perishable” food.

The Christian Care Ministries revealed that they had just received a truckload of food, so they were fine for the moment.  Then Teresa heard heard that the East Alabama Food Bank was low on supplies because so many were giving to the Red Cross.

The Hospitality Committee decided to host a Brownie-Ice Cream Sundae break for employees with the condition that at least two canned or non-perishable foods would be required for “admission.” Cash donations were also accepted.

On Wednesday, September 21, Sue Daniel and Teresa Paglione, representing NRCS state office employees, presented the East Alabama Food Bank with 137 pounds of food and $215 in cash and checks. Officials at the East Alabama Food Bank said that 20 pounds of food would feed a family of four for a week.  This donation will go a long way in feeding those in need.

Thanks for your support!
