Animal Waste Management

NRCS assists landusers in planning and implementing waste management systems to prevent or minimize degradation of air, soil, and water resources, and protect public health and safety. This includes capturing and treating manure from animal operations, then utilizing it as a resource. Technical assistance includes estimating the nutrient content of manure; and surveying and designing lagoons, storage structures, diversions, and other structural components.

AFO/CAFO

NRCS is working with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, Alabama Department of Public Health, Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee, and College of Agriculture-Auburn University, to develop and provide technical assistance for the implementation of the AFO/CAFO Rule for the state.

Poultry

NRCS specialists are working with poultry producers to develop conservation plans for waste management. Plans often include items such as dry stacks and composters. Most poultry producers now utilize composters to environmentally dispose of animal mortality on the farm.

Dairy

NRCS specialists work with the dairy farmer to develop conservation plans for waste management. Plans can include such items as rotational grazing, solid separation, waste storage ponds, and waste water irrigation.

Swine

NRCS specialists are working with swine producers and integrators to develop conservation plans for waste management in this growing industry. Plans include such items as lagoons, diversions, and waste water irrigation. NRCS and its partners are working to develop procedures and demonstrations for composting animal mortality for swine operations.
