Soil Surveys

STATUS OF SOIL SURVEYS IN ALABAMA

Modern soil surveys are available in 41 of the 67 counties in Alabama.

Mapping is complete in three counties (Coosa, Crenshaw, and Tallapoosa). The maps for these counties are being compiled or are in the process of being digitized/digital map finished, and the manuscripts are being written and edited. Field mapping continues in four on-going soil survey projects (Bibb, Lamar, Lowndes, and Washington Counties).

Clarke and Hale Counties are awaiting publication with interim reports available. Sixteen counties have out-of-date or out-of-print surveys. One county (Winston) is not mapped and does not have a project soil survey team in place. Maintenance and update project for the Redlands geographic area began in 2003.

Historical replica CDs are available for twelve counties with an out-of-print soil survey publication (Cleburne, Cullman, Limestone, Jackson, DeKalb, Dale, Fayette, and Franklin, Lawrence, Montgomery, Morgan, and Madison counties).

Fifty-one Alabama soil surveys are SSURGO certified, meeting all standards and specifications described in the NRCS National Soil Survey Handbook. These are available in digital format and can be found on the NRCS Soil Data Mart website.

Alabama cooperators: The Alabama Legislature continues to share the cost of the soil survey program by providing funds through the Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee. In a few counties, local units of government and private industry share the costs.
