Picture of watershed lake and riserUnder this program, NRCS joins with local people to help plan and install projects that increase flood protection, control erosion and enhance water quality, water supply, and water-related recreation. The law is used to supplement and bridge the gap between ongoing soil and water conservation programs to develop and protect major river systems. To date, 35 Public Law 566 projects have been completed and 18 projects are in progress. These 53 projects encompass over 3 million acres. More than 110 grade stabilization structures and 100 floodwater retarding structures have been built at a combined federal, state, and local cost of $1 million dollars.
