Minutes from Alabama Civil Rights Advisory Committee Meeting

November 17, 2005, Poarch Creek Indian Reservation - SAIL Center

Old Business

  • The budget for a cultural diversity event has been sent to the state conservationist.

New Business

  • Terry Williamson, FY2005 Chair, passed responsibilities to Joyce Nicholas, 2006 Chair.
  • New officers were elected:
    • Johnny Trayvick was elected Vice-Chair.
    • Sue Daniel was elected Recorder.
  • New Committee members were welcomed:
    • Dan Evans, Supply Clerk, State Office
    • Charlie Ramsey, District Conservationist, Mobile County and RC&D Coordinator, Baldwin County - West, new Disabilities Special Emphasis Program Manager
    • Chris Ford, Resource Soil Scientist, Decatur Team Office - North
    • Merry Buford, Soil Conservationist, Montgomery Field Office - East
    • Sue Daniel, Secretary, Engineering Section, Auburn State Office, new Asian American/Pacific Islander Special Emphasis Program Manager
  • A member requested a seminar on retirement planning. Steps should be taken now to prepare for retirement.
  • New Alabama CRAC poster was approved and will be sent to all offices.
  • A sub-committee was selected to develop items for the 2006 CRAC Plan of Work to share at the next meeting.
  • The Latino News, a Hispanic newsletter has published an item from Alabama NRCS. This is the first Hispanic news release for Alabama NRCS -- www.latino-news.com
  • A scholarship has been established by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.  More information -- www.hacu.net.
  • CRAC members were invited to a traditional Indian meal prepared by the seniors at the SAIL Center in celebration of American Indian Heritage Month (November).
  • Robert Thrower, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, gave a cultural presentation during lunch.
  • David Elliott presented the Tribe's chairman with a framed American Indian Heritage Month poster.

Next Meeting scheduled in Clanton, Alabama, at the Alabama Power Building, Wednesday, January 19, 2006,  10:00 a.m.
