Jerry L. Johnson Award
For over 30 years Jerry L. Johnson served conservation in Alabama and showed these qualities. As NRCS State Staff Forester, he worked with the conservation partnership to assist landowners with natural resource concerns. His work and dedication positively impacted the forest, wildlife, and water resources of our state. Jerry was a leader that quietly helped shape many of the natural resource policies used in the state today. He was steadfast in his belief and support of land stewardship principles. His dedication to conservation far exceeded his official job duties. Jerry passed away on December 31, 2003, from a lengthy battle with cancer only a few months after retiring as NRCS State Staff Forester. Basis for Conferring the AwardA record of coordination with other individuals and organizations was the basis for excellence in Jerry's commitment to family, work, profession, and community. Honesty has been defined as being truthful with others. Integrity has been defined as being truthful with one’s self. Honesty and integrity were the basis for Jerry’s communication with others. Who Can Be Nominated for the Award?All employees of NRCS in Alabama will be eligible. Criteria for nomination are broad. The award recipient should demonstrate the spirit of excellence in one or more of the following categories: career development, involvement with professional organizations, commitment to community/church, and family relationships. In submitting a nomination, tell how the individual excelled, not only as an NRCS employee, but also in their personal and professional life. Nature of the AwardDuring the annual meeting of the Alabama Association of Conservation Districts, the recipient of the award will receive a plaque and $1,000 to donate to the county SWCD of their choice. Depending upon the sufficiency and quality of nominations, the award will be conferred annually. How to Submit a NominationPersons may nominate themselves or anyone whom they believe to be qualified. Nominations must be submitted in writing on or before September 15 of the current year’s award. The official nomination form is available below. Submit nominations to, or obtain additional information from: NRCS State Conservationist Award Information and Selection CommitteeThe award was established with funding from the Bradley/Murphy Forestry and Natural Resources Extension Trust, for which Jerry worked for many years. The Trust, founded in 1992 by benefactor Harry Murphy, offers small monetary grants to people who have ideas about how to connect landowners to resource professionals especially consulting foresters. This is the ultimate landowner assistance program. The Award Selection Committee includes representatives from NRCS, the Alabama Association of Conservation Districts, the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee, and the Bradley/Murphy Forestry and Natural Resources Extension Trust.
