Alabama Bulletin No. AL230-7-1

Date:
  February 8, 2007

Subject:  EOP - National Black History Month

Purpose:  To provide information about National Black History Month, February 1-28, 2007.

Expiration Date:  December 31, 2007

The entire month of February is designated as National Black History Month. The theme for 2007 is “From Slavery to Freedom: Africans in the Americas.”

Many ask the question of “Why Black History Month” instead of asking “Why Not!” The achievements and contributions of African-Americans have not been sufficiently documented throughout American History. This is an opportunity to enlighten all Americans. As historians and various individuals trace the roots of African-American ancestors, the realization of Black History Month involves many ethnic groups.

Alabama NRCS Black Emphasis Program Manager (BEPM) Herbert Ross is developing an Observance Day Program and display for the State Office. I encourage field offices to do the same, if you so desire. Keep in mind that all activities will occur during normal lunch breaks or personal time. No official government time is allowed.

If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to share ideas in relation to Black Emphasis Program activities within NRCS in Alabama, contact Herbert Ross, BEPM, at (800) 342-9893, ext. 4585.
