September 14-19, 2009, has been declared Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Week. Governor Bob Riley signed a proclamation recognizing the 335 volunteer supervisors who serve in 67 Soil and Water Conservation Districts across the state for their hard work and dedication to Alabama’s land and water resources.

The joint resolution, sponsored by State Senator Roger Bedford of Russellville, recognized Alabama’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) for their 60 years of preserving the state’s environment and natural beauty.

Alabama’s SWCDs began in 1939 with the creation of the Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee (SWCC) and are the only local units of government in the state charged with the responsibility of conserving Alabama’s resources. Each SWCD is managed by a board of local supervisors who work side-by-side with the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service to carry out both organizations’ shared mission of conserving natural resources on private lands.

For more information on Alabama’s SWCDs, contact your local SWCD office or visit the Alabama SWCC website.
