September 20-26, 2009, has been declared Resource Conservation and Development Week. Governor Bob Riley signed a proclamation recognizing the efforts of Alabama’s nine Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Councils to protect, enhance, and develop the state’s natural and human resources. The joint resolution was sponsored by State Senator Roger Bedford of Russellville.

Resource Conservation and Development is a unique process that helps people protect and develop their economic, natural, and social resources in ways that improve their area's economy, environment, and quality of life. Local RC&D Councils provide ways for people to plan and implement projects that will make their communities a better place to live.

RC&D Councils were first established in 1962 to work within local communities to address conservation needs. They receive funding through the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and work with local Soil and Water Conservation Districts, county commissions, cities and towns, civic organizations, regional planning bodies, local non-profit organizations, Indian tribal bodies, and others.

For more information on RC&D Councils, visit the RC&D section of the Alabama NRCS website at: www.al.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/rcd.
