Alabama Receives $415,000 for the WHIP Program

April 13, 2004

USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is taking applications for the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP).  Alabama received $415,000 to fund the program in 2004.  WHIP is a voluntary program for people who want to develop and improve wildlife habitat.

Applications are accepted through a continuous sign-up process and may be obtained and filed at any time with local USDA Service Centers or Soil and Water Conservation District offices.

Common practices for the WHIP program include establishing habitat for bobwhite quail, prescribed burning, and planting hardwoods and longleaf pines.  To ensure consistent and efficient WHIP implementation, applications will be evaluated against a competitive ranking system.  Contact the local field office for criteria information.

The first batching period for WHIP applications for fiscal 2004 is May 28, 2004 .  For more information about the program, contact your local Natural Resources Conservation Service office.
