Alabama NRCS Announces Special Poultry Litter Distribution Project

Auburn, Alabama
February 10, 2004

The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announces a new Alabama Litter Distribution Project.  The Alabama Litter Distribution Project, a special project for Alabama designated by the NRCS State Conservationist, is now funded by 2004 Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) funds at the state level.  The project has two primary objectives.  The first objective is to create an incentive to distribute litter to areas of the state that has historically not used litter.  This will reduce litter application in areas where it has traditionally been over applied.  The second objective is the promotion of a long-term market for litter as fertilizer around the state to maintain better distribution of the nutrients.

This project is intended to fund incentive payments for three years for the hauling of poultry litter under a long-term agreement (LTA) contract.  The three years do not have to be consecutive.  Money received from this project counts toward the $450,000 limit a farmer can receive in EQIP funds.  Applications will be taken on a continuous sign-up basis and will be funded on a first-come, first-served basis.  Local field offices will begin accepting applications March 1, 2004.  For details about the program, contact your local Natural Resources Conservation Service office.
