Lee County Participates in 2006 Christmas Paradeby Anne Miller, District Administrative Coordinator, Opelika Field Office, AL
The Opelika Field Office float was designed and decorated by Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Lee County Earth Team volunteers. The float placed 3rd in the float competition. This was our 5th year to be judged as one of the top three floats. Lee County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Supervisor Gaines Whatley provided and drove the truck and trailer. Dr. James H. Miller provided the guitar music as participants sang Christmas carols. The theme for the parade this year was “Right Down Santa Claus Lane," Our theme was “Helping People Help the Land – Right Down Santa Claus Lane in Lee County." The 2006 Opelika Christmas Parade provided an opportunity for the NRCS Opelika Field Office and the Lee County SWCD to work together to promote the “Helping People Help the Land” mission and to let Lee County landowners know that the agency provides assistance based on an understanding that the land, and the landscape as a whole, must be the focus of conservation. The parade provided another opportunity for the Soil and Water Conservation District to promote conservation activities by inviting the Lee County Poster and Essay Contest from 2006 “Water Wise” and NRCS Lee County Earth Team volunteers to ride on our float. The poster and essay contest winners and other students are excited about taking part in the 2007 Lee County SWCD poster and essay competition. The theme for 2007 is “Conservation Power."
