Emergency Warning System Installed in Rural Community

Financial assistance from the Cawaco
RC&D Council made possible the
installation of a solar powered
emergency siren system.

It is vitally important that citizens are aware of severe weather impinging on their community. It is equally important that this information be disseminated rapidly as severe weather can develop with little or no notice.

The installation of an emergency sirensystem can assist in this notification. With financial assistance from the Cawaco Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council, the Royal Community in Blount County, Alabama, recently installed a solar powered emergency siren system. The system is located at the Community Center, the local gathering place and local polling station. The system is unique in that in this remote yet relatively high traffic area of rural Blount County, a solar panel serves as the power source for the emergency operation system.

According to Paul Kennedy, coordinator for the Cawaco RC&D Council, “The installation of an outdoor warning system is all about readiness. It is one more step that the Royal Community is taking to ensure that its residents can enjoy living in the safest possible environment.”

Whenever an emergency poses a direct threat to the Royal Community, the system will warn the residents with siren sounds indicating that everyone should take shelter.

Kennedy says, “By exhibiting the application of alternative energy sources in rural farm communities, we are chipping away at our dependence on foreign oil and demonstrating a simple application for ‘free’ energy in remote locations.”
