By Donna Stokes, District Education Specialist, Coffee County Soil and Water Conservation District, New Brockton, AL

Three of the poster contest winners. On May 3, 2007, Coffee County held its second annual Groundwater Festival at the Farm Center in New Brockton.  Over 200 students from Elba Elementary School, Kinston School, New Brockton Elementary School, and Zion Chapel High School participated in the in hands-on activities for groundwater education

Learning sessions were led by representatives of Coffee County Soil and Water Conservation District, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Wiregrass Resource Conservation and Development Council, and several Coffee County retired teachers. In addition, many Coffee County residents volunteered their time to assist with the fun-filled educational event as coordinators and presenters. Two volunteers greeted visitors as Ruby Raindrop and Sammy Soil, mascots of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

The students learned about nature’s water cycle, filtering techniques to remove pollutants from our water supply, and the movement of groundwater through underground soil or rock, known as an aquifer. Through hands-on learning sessions, the students experienced the difficulty of cleaning water, became more knowledgeable of the different forms of natural water, and enjoyed making and eating an ice cream concoction representing an aquifer.
