Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Lee County Soil and Water Conservation
District (SWCD) celebrated Earth Day with the City of Auburn's 2nd and 3rd grade
students and their teachers during a two-day celebration at Kiesel Park in
Auburn. They also celebrated Earth Day with 2nd and 3rd grade students at Smiths
Station Elementary School.
At both Earth Day celebrations, local state and federal agencies give
presentations promoting conservation education. Students participated in
interactive conservation activities.
Earth Team volunteers working along with Lee County NRCS/SWCD used the
Enviroscape to demonstrate environmental impacts on a watershed. The interaction
with the Enviroscape allowed the students to visually see how soil erosion,
pesticides, and runoff impact a watershed and help them understand what they can
do to protect the environment.
NRCS
and district employees gave presentations about soil formation. The activity
concentrated on the functions of soil that help sustain all life on earth.
District Supervisor Dr. L.E. Ensminger talked to the students about changes
in their environment and how they can protect their natural resources. Earth Day
is a time to celebrate gains we have made and create new visions to accelerate
environmental progress. Earth Day and every day is a time to act to protect our
planet.
