Lee County Celebrates Stewardship Week 2007
by Anne Miller, District Administrative Coordinator, Opelika, Alabama
The
Lee County Soil and Water Conservation District celebrated Soil and Water
Stewardship Week with its annual meeting and awards breakfast. Over 140
students, parents, teachers, principals, and community leaders attended to show
their support of conservation education.
This year’s poster contest theme was “Conservation’s Power.” Students from
kindergarten through sixth grade entered this part of the contest. The judges
had a hard time selecting the winners from over 300 poster entries from public
and private schools. The poster contest winners received $30, $20, and $10 from
first, second, and third place, respectively. The 1st place winners will compete
with winners in the 12-county Area IV competition. The winners in the Area IV
competition will then participate in the Alabama State competition.
Students from the 7th through 12th grades entered the essay contest. At the
breakfast, the first place winners read their winning essays expressing their
deep convictions for conservation and stewardship. The essay winners received
$50, $30, and $20 for first, second, and third place, respectively.
The
Lee County Water Festival 2007 T-Shirt Art Competition winners were also
presented with awards. The winning artwork was used to create the 2007 Lee
County Water Festival t-shirt, which was given to 1,960 4th grade students and
teachers who attended the 4th Annual Lee County Water Festival. The t-shirt
winners received $100, $75, and $50 savings bonds for first, second, and third
place, respectively provided by the Banks of Lee County. The teachers received
the same amount in cash to spend on supplies for their classrooms.
All of the winners were presented with a package of conservation information
and a T-shirt sponsored by TR Motors. The 2007 Stewardship Week celebration was
truly a time to honor all those who participated in making conservation
education an important component of the plan of work in Lee County.
