County NRCS/SWCD employees were on-hand when Smiths Station High School unveiled
the new Biology/Ecology Lab that was built with a grant from the Mid-South RC&D.
The grant was matched with over $7,000 from the Smiths Community. The total
budget for the lab was $34,190.
The Biology/Ecology Lab allows students to do experiments in soil and water
conservation. They are learning skills in land and water management while
working in the lab. The Biology/Ecology students, along with Agri-Science
students, are involved in testing soil and water samples in the Smiths new
community park.
The students are conducting scientific investigations and incorporating
technology in the acquisition of data and for constructing/analyzing graphs,
tables and charts using computer based or calculator-based probe ware. These
skills and knowledge are carried over into the community through community
involvement projects.
Senator Kim Benefield said, "The Smiths Station High School Science teacher,
Carol Britton, is doing a great job in the Biology/Ecology Lab. We are happy to
be able to help supply equipment to make this lab one of the best in the state."
