Students
and chaperones blast off to an intergalactic adventure –
the ultimate field trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Huntsville,
Alabama.
Sponsored by funds through the Northwest Alabama RC&D Council and the Alabama
Cooperative Extension Service, 224 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from
Lauderdale County Elementary School in Rogersville along with 21 adults
experienced the U.S. Space and Rocket Center excitement.
In groups of about 25, the students toured the museum and rocket park and
were given information about the Space Camp and other opportunities offered by
the Center.
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center is the nation’s best museum and research
facility covering the history of U. S. space travel, exploration, and military
missile technology. Accredited by the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D. C.,
the Space Center contains original one-of-a-kind artifacts…including the Apollo
16 capsule, spacesuits, etc.
Northwest Alabama RC&D purchased books, DVD’s, puzzles, and teaching
materials for the school library with the remaining grant funds.
Kelley Joiner, Assistant Principal of Lauderdale County High School, stated,
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our students that will definitely prove to
be a learning experience for all involved. We are grateful that you (sponsors)
are committed to our school and to our students in their educational endeavors."
