Students in the Independent Reading Council EEL 4-H Chapter in Anniston
recently learned about protecting the environment. Staff from the Calhoun County
SWCD/NRCS staff spoke to the group about conservation, natural resources, and being
good stewards of the land.
NRCS District Conservationist Jody Burdette used the Enviroscape to
demonstrate how water pollution occurs and how it can be prevented. Subjects
such as soil erosion, use of pesticides and fertilizers, stream pollution and
storm water runoff were covered. About 10 children and 7 adults took part in the
event. The children were very knowledgeable about conservation and asked many
questions.
The success achieved in presenting the conservation program to the group goes
far beyond the efforts of the Anniston Field Office.
Ms. Janice Lee, Director of the 4-H Chapter, approached NRCS staff about the
possibility of helping revitalize the after school learning center. A proposal
was approved by the Coosa Valley RC&D Council to assist in making structural
improvements to the building as well as making the center handicapped
accessible. The Calhoun County SWCD/NRCS and Coosa Valley RC&D look forward to
working with the group on the needed improvements.
It is important to deliver the message of conservation to all groups to
ensure the NRCS message "Help People, Help the Land" reaches everyone.
