Jefferson County Earth Team Volunteers manned two of the 43 booths at Earth Day in the Gardens in April at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
Earth Day at the Gardens is hailed as the largest Earth Day celebration in the state with over sixty organizations participating. Jefferson County Earth Team Volunteers staffed booths that highlighted sun protection and butterflies. They helped make this family-friendly event an educational experience for all participants.
Those in attendance learned about Alabama’s natural resources and important environmental issues, as well as practical things like how to make a sunbonnet out of newspaper.
Earth Day at the Gardens included many other free hands-on activities for all age groups including a scavenger hunt to learn about nature and the environment, recycled art projects, painting canvas bags, building pine cone bird feeders, and making seed magnets.
Live costumed characters like "Treeture," "Smokey Bear," and of course, our own "Ruby Raindrop," interacted with the participants. There were also colorful displays, freebies of all description, and leading experts highlighting protecting and conserving the land, water, and air in greater Birmingham area and throughout the state. There was also live entertainment from local bands and youth choirs.
For the 1,800 guests and 200+ volunteers, it was truly an Earth Day to remember!
