Students Experience Classroom in the Forest in Coffee County

By Sue Leverett, SWCD Education Specialist, New Brockton, AL

Fifth graders from New Brockton Elementary School went on a forest field trip to a local landowner’s property on October 29, 2008. This fieldtrip was the second portion of the Alabama Treasure Forest program -- Classroom in the Forest: Forest in the Classroom.

In September, during Forest in the Classroom, a forester, a landowner, and a stakeholder shared with students their passion for forest land and for the private landowner. While in the forest, the students rotated through five learning stations taught by forestry and wildlife professionals. At each station, the students learned how to identify trees and about the value of our forest land and wildlife. They also learned the importance of preserving our natural resources for future generations.

This event was sponsored by the Coffee County SWCD/NRCS, Wiregrass RC&D, Alabama Forestry Commission, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and the Alabama TREASURE Forest Association.
