Monroe County NRCS/SWCD Partners Host FAWN
by Joyce Nicholas, District Conservationist, NRCS, Monroeville, AL
Several
Monroe County agencies and many volunteers provided 5th graders from across the
county an opportunity to celebrate FAWN—a day of
learning forestry activities that provides awareness lessons.
I love a good partnership, one where each group contributes to the
accomplishment of a shared goal, especially if it involves conservation
education and the possibility to have fun—we did just
that in Monroe County.
Fall! Its a great time of the year to host an event where all of the
day’s activities take place out in the woods—ok, the
forest. The weather was wonderful. We had a cool weather front pass to
through and the humidity dropped to around 80 percent. It made the three
days a treat in themselves.
The site was an absolutely beautiful backdrop for our FAWN educational
conservation program, and so convenient --just across the street from the Monroe
County Field Office and adjacent to the campus of Alabama Southern Community
College. The TREASURE Forest with outdoor classroom/teaching stations
installed along the trails was a perfect location.
Many partners were on hand to provide assistance to help educate the youth of
Monroe County:
- Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District DAC Robin Thames
- Monroe County Alabama Forestry Commission Crew
- Monroe County Alabama Cooperative Extension System Employees
- Monroe County Farm Service Agency Employees
- Monroe County Rural Development Office Employees
- Monroe County Forestry Planning Committee
- Master Gardeners
- Monroe County NRCS Employees and Earth Team Volunteers
