As
an Alabama Reading Initiative school, Hubbertville School in Fayette County knew
that students do not read at the same level. The school needed reading materials
in a broad range of levels. Tombigbee RC&D Council provided a grant for the
school to purchase several sets of different levels and genres of reading
materials. They purchased a set of 432 non-fiction books and 271 fiction books
to be used in small group reading lessons. Students will have multiple
opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions about what they read, which
will boost comprehension skills.
Students in kindergarten through sixth grade will benefit from the leveled
readers. At present, Hubbertville School has 188 students in those classes. All
students will benefit--male and female, all races, ethnicity, and academic
ability levels.
This program will last indefinitely. The materials are non-consumable and
will be used from year to year, depending on their durability. The materials are
located in the reading coach’s resource room, on the same floor the K-6th grade
classrooms to make them easily accessible to all the students.
Hubbertville School can now provide students with reading
material appropriate to their individual reading level, in a variety of
subjects. When children are successful readers, they become excited about
reading and will increase their fluency and comprehensive skills. As an Alabama
reading Initiative school, Hubbertville’s goal is 100 percent mastery of grade
level reading. The material purchased with this RC&D grant will allow them to
push toward that goal.
