With programs and deadlines being added constantly, it gets harder these days for NRCS field office staff to manage time for community outreach. But, when we received a request from E’licia Chaverest, Coordinator for the Small Farms Research Center, Alabama A&M, to participate in an Agricultural Risk Management and Business Development Training Workshop, we jumped at the opportunity.

The workshop was held in Mobile, Alabama, and hosted over 75 small-scale producers and community leaders from across Alabama. NRCS District Conservationist Joyce Nicholas kicked off the event Thursday morning by welcoming everyone to Mobile. She also took the opportunity to inform the audience about some of the services that the NRCS has to offer as well as the programs we had available.

There were several key speakers throughout the workshop that covered various subjects such as "Marketing What You Produce" and "Developing and Using a Business Plan".

NRCS Soil Conservationist Joshua Elliott represented the agency during a Panel Discussion on Government Programs and New Initiatives. The discussion proved very helpful in answering many of the questions (and myths) associated with Government programs.

The workshop was a tremendous success and the Mobile/Washington Counties NRCS looks forward to assisting in the years to come.
