Blount County Land Judging

Appalachian High School Wins First Place.

The 2008 Blount County land judging contest was held at the farm of Mr. Thomas Baty in September. There were five FFA teams competing: Appalachian High School, Cleveland High School, J.B. Pennington High School, Locust Fork High School, and Susan Moore High School.

The five teams met at Locust Fork Park for lunch, (furnished by Blount County SWCD) and a short time of fellowship before going to the Baty Farm.

At the competition, the teams had four sites to judge: forestland, pastureland, cropland, and home site. With the help of employees from SWCD, NRCS, and the Alabama Forestry Commission, the contest went smoothly. At the end of the day Appalachian High School finished in first place, Cleveland High School finished in second place, and Susan Moore High School finished in third place.

Many thanks to Mr. Baty for hosting the competition; Mr. Waymon Pitts (District 4 Commissioner) and the Blount County Commission for preparing the competition sites; and Tracy Cole (Resource Conservationist) for judging the sites.
