Covington County Groundwater Festival a Success

By Joshua Elliott, Soil Conservationist, NRCS, Andalusia, Alabama

Students at Covington County Water Festival pose with Ruby Raindrop.Covington County held its 3rd Groundwater Festival February at LBW Community College in Andalusia, AL. Over 500 4th graders from every elementary school in the county participated.

This year’s theme was "Water is Life." The Covington County SWCD Education Specialist, Patricia Gable, presented a series of programs throughout January for all the 4th grade classes in Covington County to prepare them for the event.

Laughter and excitement filled the halls as students participated in three events including Edible Aquifer, Drop in a Bucket, and Water Cycle Bracelets.

These hands-on activities gave students a better understanding of the importance of keeping our water supply clean and productive.  It also helped teach them about how water is essential in keeping all aspects of the environment working in unison.

Thanks to the many sponsors and volunteers who made this year's Ground Water Festival a great success.  We look forward to next year with great expectations.
