| 2009 State Land Career Development EventBy Annette Spivy, Soil Conservation Technician, NRCS, Alexander City, Alabama
The FFA State Land Career Development Event was held on Waller Farms in Coosa County on March 26, 2009. Eleven teams competed against each other for the chance to attend the National Event in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This FFA State Land Career Development Event is designed to help students learn more about land, difference in soils and their capabilities, methods of soil conservation and improvement, treatments to help in obtaining higher production, and selection of suitable home sites. The event is more than a competition; it is a learning opportunity for students. About 95 people were present including NRCS personnel, SWCD personnel, parents, teachers, and students. Falkville High School in Morgan County placed first. Second Place was Clay County High School, 3rd Place was Millry High School, Washington County, and 4th Place was Brantley High School, Crenshaw County. We sincerely thank Rodney Waller, owner of Waller Farms, for allowing us to hold the contest on his farm and for the extra work that he endured in order for this contest to be set up and to be a great success. Special thanks are extended to the Coosa Valley RC&D Council and the Coosa Central High School for their support and donations. The event was sponsored by the Alabama Association of Conservation Districts in cooperation with the USDA-Natural Resource Conservation Service. We are very proud of all the teams for making it this far and congratulate Falkville High School. Good luck in Oklahoma!
