Randolph County
Forestry and Young Farmers Field Days
The Alabama Forest Commissions
hosted a Forest Field Day for 5th graders, and the Young Farmers FFA hosted an
Annual Young Farmers Field Day for 4th graders in Randolph County.
The Forest Field Day was held
by private landowners that are actively applying forest management practices.
There were four different locations throughout the county; Woodland, Wadley,
Roanoke, and Wedowee.
Randolph/Clay County SWCD/NRCS
informed the participants about forest related topics such as threatened and
endangered species, habitat improvement for wildlife, stream management zone,
and riparian buffer. Students were captured by the outdoors setting and excited
to learning new ways of improving their environment.
The forest day also included
presentations about tree identification, "Everything Needs Space," and "Who
Lives Here."
When the Young Farmers ALFA
hosted its 4th Annual Young Farmers Farm Day, students from from Woodland,
Wadley, Wedowee, Handley, and New Hope Christian Schools attended.
Randolph County SWCS/NRCS
staff presented the Enviroscape to more than 350 students and adults. The
Enviroscape is a interactive learning tool that helps build understanding for
the importance of water conservation, water pollution, water cycle and how we
can protect resources. The demonstration showed how watersheds function; how
point source and non-point source pollution occurs; and how to prevent water
pollution. Students rotated turns making it rain and following potential
pollutions path from their communities to nearby water bodies such as Lake
Wedowee. The Enviroscape model received outstanding reviews from the audience.
The Annual Farm Day also
included various demonstrations such as butter churning, a mobile dairy,
micro-invertebrates, Alabama Power Company, water sampling, and beekeeping.
The Forest Field Day and Young
Farmers Farm Day were a success in providing education to our youth about their
environment.
