Students learn about agriculture at the Youth Day in Wilcox County, Alabama

The Small Farms Research Center at Alabama A&M University recently sponsored a Youth Entrepreneurial and Agribusiness Development Day in Wilcox County. Greg Dansby with NRCS was on hand to talk to the students about agriculture.

For those you who did not get a chance to attend, you missed a treat! The day was filled with children and adults learning about agriculture, rural entrepreneurship and the various career opportunities in agriculture and related fields. We embraced over sixty youth, adults, and extension agents at John Hayden's Farm, located in Lisman, Alabama. This event was fun and very educational.

There were quite a few highlighted moments from the event which included the beautiful farm and garden by John Hayden, Margaret Mazikowski's value-added demonstration on goat milk lotion, and the various government agencies discussing their programs (USDA Farm Service Agency, Alabama Forestry Commission, and NRCS).

We would like to give special thanks to Mr. Hayden for allowing us to collaborate with him and in bringing this Youth Entrepreneurial and Agribusiness Day to his area. We would also like to thank all of the resource speakers Gretchen Thomas, Farm Service Agency; Chuck Quinn, Alabama Forestry Department; Greg Dansby, NRCS; Margaret Mazikowski, Margaret Soap Shop; Dr. Taylor Byrd, Alabama A&M University, and all of the other individuals who worked hard behind the scenes to make this event possible and a success.

We would also like to thank the participants for joining us, and allowing us the opportunity to bring this program directly to the community. For without you, our program would not have been a success. Thank you all!
