Mr. Ken Megginson, (standing right) of the Mobile County Public School System was impressed with the hands-on water quality activities.

The Mobile County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) held its first Water Festival in May at Christ United Methodist Church.

About 200 4th graders from Collier Elementary and St. Mary’s Catholic School participated.

Students visited three stations Water Cycle, Filtration, and Watersheds. The stations concluded with a Fishin’ Magicians magic show.

Students from Baker High School assisted with the day’s activities.

Because the Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) is the 19th largest school system in the nation, the Mobile County SWCD chose to hold its first Festival with a small number of students. Officials from the MCPSS were in attendance and very supportive of expanding next year’s event! The birth of a successful partnership!

In addition to the Mobile County SWCD, funding was made possible through the Gulf Coast RC&D Council, Mobile Area Water and Sewer System, and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. Other sponsors included the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Coastal Alabama Clean Water Partnership, Alabama Coastal Foundation, USDA-Farm Service Agency, and  USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service.
