Hurricane Katrina Aftermath Reports

  • Alabama will make no request for exigency EWP funds as a result of Hurricane Katrina damages
  • Anticipated EWP work as a result of three hurricanes within a year’s time:
    • Installing firebreaks and conducting prescribed burning, as conditions allow, on 2,173,650 acres to reduce fuel loading and prevent destruction of residual timber from wildfire
    • Concerns related to prescribed burning:
      • Limited availability of trained prescribed burn managers (bonded)
      • Limited days with ideal prescribed burning weather
      • Limited availability of equipment to install firebreaks
      • Historically, low a percentage of landowners are willing to conduct prescribed burns
    • Debris removal needed on 222,541 acres to restore damaged forest land
    • NRCS has been invited to attend a meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers and county, city and local governments of Mobile County on Monday, September 19th at 11:00 a.m., in downtown Mobile. NRCS representatives will review the EWP program and get a better understanding of what the needs are in Mobile County.
    • All offices now have full communication capabilities
