Alabama will make no request for exigency EWP funds as a result of Hurricane
Katrina damages
Anticipated EWP work as a result of three hurricanes within a year’s time:
Installing firebreaks and conducting prescribed burning, as conditions
allow, on 2,173,650 acres to reduce fuel loading and prevent destruction
of residual timber from wildfire
Concerns related to prescribed burning:
Limited availability of trained prescribed burn managers (bonded)
Limited days with ideal prescribed burning weather
Limited availability of equipment to install firebreaks
Historically, low a percentage of landowners are willing to conduct
prescribed burns
Debris removal needed on 222,541 acres to restore damaged forest land
NRCS has been invited to attend a meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers
and county, city and local governments of Mobile County on Monday, September
19th at 11:00 a.m., in downtown Mobile. NRCS representatives will review the EWP
program and get a better understanding of what the needs are in
Mobile County.
