Hurricane Katrina Aftermath Reports

Tuesday, September 20, 2005

  • NRCS continues to inventory sites to determine needs.
  • The Army Corps of Engineers is taking the lead to remove debris in navigable streams in Alabama.
  • NRCS personnel met with the Corps and local units of government in Mobile on 9/19/05, to explain the EWP program.  Local units of government asked if EWP authority would extend to removing boats and debris from areas off sites other than road rights-of-way.  The current plan is to work under existing EWP regulations.  Katrina is not the first, and will not likely be the last, natural disaster that Alabama will deal with this year.  Unless the legislative language reads differently, Alabama will use current manual guidelines for projected work, which is work within the floodplain.
  • 39 Blackberries have been received, disseminated to employees, and are working properly.
